Croatia head coach Niko Kovač believes his team showed a tactically outstanding performance in Milan and offered an apology to the Italians.

After another good performance in European Qualifiers, Niko Kovač's men secured a point in Italy, and had the chance to bring home all three.

"We had Italy under control for almost 90 minutes. Italy defended well, and we were aware that our chances will be rare. They were better - for instance those for Olić and Perišić at the end of both halves - and I am satisfied. I am also a bit sad, since we missed an opportunity to win, and due to the events in the second half. I apologize to everyone, especially the Italians, for our supporters' behaviour", summarized Croatia head coach.

The match was interrupted, and Kovač said: "I was disappointed and helpless, there are no right words for this. If someone has a problem, he has to deal with it outside the stadium. This is not the real image of Croatia, Croatians are honest people that respect other nations, while this kind of behaviour leads nowhere. Of course, Croatia will be sanctions, but I think there is no reason for any point deductions".

Before half-hour mark, Croatia had to deal with Luka Modrić's groin injury, but did not lose the upper hand.

"The way we have played deserves the highest grade. We had possession, we wanted it since we have that kind of players. I was a little surprised that Italy defended so deeply, but with Modrić off, we have proved that we have an excellent back-up plan, with Rakitić back as defensive midfielder and Kovačić in", said Kovač.

Croatia will continue the qualifying round in March next year, at home against third-placed Norway.

"We are on the right path, and we are satisfied with ten points from four games, but the job is not yet finished. These performances have to be repeated. If my team stays healthy, I can see no reason for Croatia to fail. Italy and Croatia remain the favourites to win the group, but caution is needed because of Norway and Bulgaria", concluded Niko Kovač.
